DARREN MARZIALI
ARTIST STATEMENT
My artwork attempts to capture local landscapes in simplistic and colourful ways. Using shape and colour, I try to create work that evokes a sense of place and the wonder that I feel when I encounter the landscape.
My paintings reflect the many hours I’ve spent outside, traveling around Canada, painting “en plein air”. Working mostly in oils, I use the small sketches made on location to recreate larger paintings in the studio. This allows me to refine the image and employ the use of imagination to enhance the composition. Out of this process, my works sometimes move toward abstraction while retaining a likeness.
ABOUT ME
I grew up in rural Ontario surrounded by big skies and endless fields. I’ve always had a love of the outdoors and feel most myself when in nature. This love was fostered by the trips I took with my grandfather, Melvin, to Northern Ontario—a location renowned for its connection to the Group of Seven.
My grandfather was a skilled artist and owned and operated his own sign-painting business for many years. I think having that creative spirit in my blood along with a deep-seated appreciation for the natural world has led me to who I am today.
COMMISSIONS
I often get asked about commissions. Commissions are custom pieces of art, where you will work with me, the artist, to develop an idea and then I bring it to life.
If and when possible I will work “en plein air” but I can also work from a photograph or we can sit down and plan out what you’d like.
Commissions can add a meaningful touch to your home and make great gifts—a lifelong keepsake.
